Clear Capsule thinks outside the box with video for Starflyer 59 cover "Hazel Would"

Starflyer 59 is one of the most pivotal and inspirational bands of the 90s shoegaze scene yet are often overshadowed in the shoegaze cannon by UK heavyweights like Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride.

Released alongside classics such as Souvlaki, Going Blank Again, and Mezcal Head, Starflyer 59's Silver is a monumental album that introduced heavier sounds into shoegaze which helped mold the modern scene. à La Carte Records pays homage to Starflyer 59 along with some of the label’s favorite current shoegaze artists on “All My Friends Who Play Guitar: A Tribute to Starflyer 59” featuring Doused, Bedroom Eyes, All Under Heaven, Clear Capsule, Spirits of Leo, Broken Head, and Bonded.

Clear Capsule kicks off the compilation with their rendition of “Hazel Would.” On the heels of their breakthrough “Gravity Licker” EP (2022) and a tour stint with Deafheaven, the LA group takes this classic and realizes its full potential. The band is fronted by Bryce Pulaski who infuses a level of creativity into his songwriting that far exceeds the status quo of the modern shoegaze scene. This ingenuity is experienced first-hand in this cover. Pulaski takes the heavy, forward-driving essence of “Hazel Would” builds upon it with a dense monolith of sound, blaring feedback, and bombastic drumming that makes you want to smash a wall.
