Observation Room Channels Vintage Synth-Pop Dystopia on Debut EP, Out July 11 via à La Carte Records
Brooklyn’s Observation Room emerge from the neon haze of the underground with their self-titled debut EP, a four-track plunge into the stark, shimmering world of moody synth-pop. Out July 11th on à La Carte Records, the release delivers a meticulous blend of Book of Love’s crystalline melodies, Depeche Mode’s industrial melancholia, and the stark minimalism of early Human League, all while remaining distinctly their own.
The lead single, “Workers,” out May 9th, hums with the cold efficiency of an '80s assembly line, where mechanized rhythms collide with human urgency. A relentless synth groove pounds beneath chant-like vocals, evoking an era of steel and sweat refracted through a dystopian synth-pop lens. It’s industrial in its precision but undeniably melodic, an anthem of labor cast in flickering neon light.
On June 6th, “Orange Moon Distance” takes a sharp turn into expansive, operatic territory. Built on sweeping synth arrangements and a winding, almost prog-like structure, the track unfolds with an eerie grandeur—less a song, more an odyssey. It’s cinematic, intoxicating, and drenched in cosmic longing.

Observation Room began in 2023 as the solo project of Marina F, who recorded early demos in transit from the quiet forests of Maine back to the pulsing heart of New York. Though a stark departure from her past projects in punk and post-punk, the DIY ethos remained, fueling an obsessive approach to electronic pop. Chloe Olson later joined on bass, synths, and vocals, rounding out the duo’s live presence and deepening their sonic palette. Their music leans into the Reagan-era aesthetic—both its sleek futurism and the underlying sense of unease—drawing a direct line between past and present, nostalgia and anxiety.
With their debut EP, Observation Room fully commit to the drama and movement of synth-pop while injecting it with something raw, immediate, and eerily familiar. The record lands July 11th, but the portal opens when “Workers” arrives May 9th. -
