Sculpture Club’s journey from glitter-soaked party-punk chaos to a nuanced force in American post-punk has been anything but linear—and that’s what makes this release so essential. A Place to Stand / Worth brings together the band’s two seminal records on one cassette, charting their transformation from a confetti-cannon cult act to a group capable of weaving tender melancholy into their jagged edges. Led by Chaz Costello, Sculpture Club began in 2016 with a riotous spirit and a Salt Lake City scene left in their glittery wake; now based in Dallas, their evolution feels both hard-earned and inevitable.

2016’s A Place to Stand is a dispatch from the band’s early days, full of riptide basslines and crashing urgency, echoing the goth-tinged grandeur of Echo & The Bunnymen and The Cure. It’s a record that thrums with kinetic energy—driving guitars, shimmering leads, and the raw thrill of a band that threw themselves into every set like it might be their last.

By 2021, with Worth, Sculpture Club had learned to play with light as deftly as shadow. Open-hearted melodies and subtle acoustic textures softened their once relentless attack, without ever letting go of the glitter on the floor. Violins and chorus-soaked basslines deepened the palette, allowing a new kind of intimacy to emerge—less a retreat from their roots than a reimagining of them.

This cassette captures that arc: the all-in glamour of the early days and the shimmery melancholy of a band willing to evolve in public. With an ever-shifting lineup, a growing reputation for spellbinding live performances (sharing stages with Xiu Xiu, The Ocean Blue, Tamaryn, Riki & Soft Kill), and a restless vision for what comes next, Sculpture Club remains a testament to the power of community, form, and function—two albums, one tape, a decade of restless invention.
