Sparkler "Glidewinder"

San Diego’s Sparkler return with Glidewinder, a sophomore full-length that doubles down on shoegaze’s original promise rather than its modern mutations. Where much of today’s scene folds hardcore abrasion into layers of reverb, Sparkler move in the opposite direction—toward texture, density, and motion as ends in themselves. Distortion becomes melodic, noise becomes atmosphere, and songs unfold less like riffs than slow-moving weather systems. It’s a sound that traces a clear line back to My Bloody Valentine, Swirlies, and the more psychedelic margins of ’90s shoegaze, without ever feeling like reenactment.

Following their 2022 debut Big Sonic Chill, Sparkler sharpen their self-described “truegaze” ethos into something both heavier and more precise. On Glidewinder, guitars lurch between jet-engine overdrive and brittle shimmer, while the rhythm section churns underneath with a hypnotic, almost mechanical persistence. The band’s control of space—knowing when to suffocate a moment and when to let it hang—gives the record a constant sense of tension, as if each track could either dissolve into static or detonate outright.
